 NIOS Plus Two English Summary


1. My First Steps

Sunil Gavaskar was born on 10th July 1949. He had cricket in his blood. His father was a good club cricketer, and his uncle Madhav Mantri played four official Tests for India. Sunil loved visiting his uncle and hoped to get one of his bats, but his uncle refused and told him he must work hard and sweat to earn India colours. He said there is no shortcut to the top. Sunil was fascinated by the trophies and especially the autographed stumps from the 1952 India and England teams. From childhood, he wanted to become a batsman.


2. Leisure

In this poem, the poet expresses his pain over modern man's indifference to the beauty of nature. He emphasizes the importance of leisure, saying we are always busy earning and spending. We don’t take time to admire natural beauty, such as cows or sheep grazing, or the sunlight dancing on water. Because of this, we miss out on nature’s free gifts and cannot enjoy its serenity.


3. Reading with Understanding

This story highlights the environmental awareness of a rural couple, Thimmakka and her husband Bikkalu Chikkaiah from Hulikal village in Karnataka. They had no children, so in the 1950s, they planted 284 banyan trees along a 3 km stretch of highway. Thimmakka’s husband was disabled, and she worked as a daily labourer. Their efforts created a green canopy and earned them national recognition. The value of the trees is estimated at ₹85 crores.


4. Father Dear Father

This is an imaginary letter written by a schoolboy named Rahul in response to his father's letter. Rahul’s rank dropped from first to second, and his father expressed annoyance. Rahul responds emotionally, saying they’ve never been close and questions whether literacy leads to confidence or anxiety, frustration, and fear.


5. Fuel of the Future

There are many sources of renewable energy like solar, wind, tides, water, and biogas. India is the fifth-largest producer of wind energy. Wind was used for sailing boats as early as 5000 BC. In California, wind plants reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 2.5 billion pounds in 1990. Wind energy is now the fastest-growing source of electricity in the world.


6. My Grandmother’s House

This poem by Kamala Das reflects on her childhood memories and the loss of her grandmother. The poet recalls the love and warmth she felt in her grandmother's house. After her death, the poet feels a great emptiness and longs for love, even begging for it in small quantities from strangers.


7. Reading with Understanding

Exams cause tremendous stress not only for students but also for teachers and parents. Anxiety spreads quickly among all. Reasons include career pressure, attitudes of elders, and peer pressure. Managing time and categorizing tasks (Important A, Less Important B, Routine C) can reduce stress. Exercise helps, and one must remember that failure is never final, and success is not eternal.


8. A Case of Suspicion

This story, by Wallace, is about Dr. Benson who receives a call from a patient on a dark night. On the way, he accepts a lift from a stranger named Evans. The doctor suspects Evans stole his watch and threatens him with a pistol. Evans, trembling, returns the watch, but later the doctor realizes it actually belonged to Evans. The doctor had wrongly suspected him.


9. My Son Will Not Be a Beggar

Ved Mehta, the author, became blind at a young age. His father, a trained doctor, couldn’t cure him but was determined Ved would not become a beggar. His parents sent him to a school for the blind in Bombay. The principal promised personal care. His mother reluctantly agreed, and Ved’s journey toward self-reliance began.


10. Where the Mind is Without Fear

This poem from Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali is a prayer to God to make India a land of freedom, knowledge, truth, and unity. Tagore dreams of a country free from fear, superstition, and discrimination, where hard work and clear thinking shape the future.


11. Reading with Understanding

Most child labourers in India work in agriculture or as domestic helpers. Many children, especially girls, do full-time domestic work which hinders their development. The true meaning of child labour must include these unseen forms. Rural life is often wrongly shown as ideal, ignoring the struggles of rural children.


12. If I Were You

This play features Gerrard, a playwright, and an intruder who breaks into his cottage with a revolver, intending to kill him and take his identity. Gerrard, calm and clever, tricks the intruder into believing he is also wanted by the police. Gerrard captures the intruder and calls the police.


13. The Tiger in the Tunnel

Baldeo, a railway watchman, bravely fights a tiger with his axe in a forest tunnel but is killed. His son Tembu later takes over his father's duties. Despite the tragedy, life goes on. The story portrays courage and responsibility in the face of danger.


14. The Road Not Taken

This poem by Robert Frost discusses life choices. The poet stands at a fork in a forest path, uncertain which road to choose. He picks one, knowing it will shape his future. Later, he reflects that this decision "made all the difference" in his life.


15. Reading with Understanding

This passage discusses biomedical waste like syringes and amputated parts, which pose health and environmental risks. Composting or incineration are current solutions, but recycling or reusing waste is more sustainable and economically beneficial.


16. I Must Know the Truth

Aradhana, a talented dancer, is chosen to inaugurate a show. She is disturbed by the presence of her aunt Pramella, who reveals Aradhana is adopted. Hurt, Aradhana seeks comfort in her mother’s love and performs, dedicating her dance to her mother.


17. India – Her Past and Future

In this speech, Jawaharlal Nehru reflects on India’s history and dreams for her future. India must move forward by respecting tradition and embracing change. Nehru supports Gandhi’s principles of truth and nonviolence. He hopes India will be united, progressive, and free from caste and communal divisions.


18. Night of the Scorpion

In this poem by Nissim Ezekiel, the poet’s mother is stung by a scorpion. Villagers chant and pray for her recovery. His rationalist father treats her with medicine and a holy man chants incantations. After 20 hours, she recovers and thanks God that her children were safe.


19. Reading with Understanding

An elderly couple seeks shelter at a hotel on a stormy night. The hotel is full, but a kind clerk gives them his own room. Later, the old man, William Waldorf Astor, builds the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Hotel and appoints the clerk, George C. Boldt, as its first manager.


20. Reading with Understanding

Mohammad Riyaz Ahmad, an 11-year-old boy, saved a 4-year-old girl from being hit by a train. He lost one arm and the wrist of the other. Despite the trauma, he aspires to become a doctor and has received the Sanjay Chopra Bravery Award.


21. Reading with Understanding

Education is not just about earning a living. It should help individuals become responsible citizens. Education is a tool for personal growth and social development. It prepares one to lead a purposeful and meaningful life and to face modern challenges.


22. Reading with Understanding

This passage describes the banyan tree, commonly found in sub-Himalayan forests and peninsular India. It grows near temples, along roads, and in villages. Its roots grow down from branches, forming trunks. The tree is large, strong, and its leaves are oval, smooth, and shiny.

Rajamani, a 12-year-old boy from Tamil Nadu, discontinued studies to help his widowed mother. After an eye infection, he also developed skin issues and was diagnosed with HIV. This tragic case highlights the health and social challenges faced by poor children.


24. Reading with Understanding

This is a message from the UN Secretary-General on International Day Against Drug Abuse (26th June 2005). He urges people to "value yourself and make healthy choices." Drugs may sound attractive but are harmful. Sports and healthy living build discipline and confidence.


25. Bholi

Bholi, real name Sulekha, was neglected due to her stammer and pockmarks. She was given a chance to study. Her parents tried to marry her off to an old, greedy man, but she boldly refused. Instead, she chose to serve her parents and become a teacher in the same school where she was educated.
